It is the second-most populous metropolitan area in India after Delhi, with a population of around 15 million. Kolkata is located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, about 96 miles (154 km) upstream from the head of the Bay of Bengal.

Kolkata is a major commercial, cultural, and educational center in eastern India. It is home to the Indian Museum, the oldest museum in Asia; the National Library of India, the largest library in Asia; and the University of Calcutta, the oldest university in India. Kolkata has a rich history dating back over two thousand years. The city was originally a cluster of three villages: Kalikata, Gobindapur, and Sutanuti. In 1690, Job Charnock, an agent of the English East India Company, established a trading post in Kalikata. The city grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries under British rule, and became the capital of British India in 1772. Kolkata remained the capital of British India until 1911, when the capital was relocated to Delhi.

Kolkata played a major role in the Indian independence movement. The city was home to many prominent revolutionaries, including Subhas Chandra Bose and Khudiram Bose. Kolkata was also the site of the Bengal partition of 1905, which was a major turning point in the Indian independence movement.

After independence, Kolkata continued to be a major cultural and economic center in India. However, the city experienced a period of decline in the 1970s and 1980s due to a number of factors, including economic stagnation and political instability. In recent years, Kolkata has experienced a revival, and is now one of the fastest-growing cities in India.
